The Truth About Robotics
Robot means “forced labor” in Czechoslovakia which is where the word originated. What you parents or grandparents though of as nothing more than science fiction is now becoming a reality in the 21st century. What use to be thought of as make believe is now becoming reality.
There are three fake laws of robotics. They serve more to tingle the imagination than they do to serve any practical application. The first law of robotics is that a robot may not injure humanity. This is actually law zero. I know, silly. The second law is that a robot may not harm any person. The third law is that a robot must obey human commands unless it is ordered to harm a human. The final law is that a robot must protect its own existence unless doing so would bring harm to a human. Now anyone with a brain knows that the military has violated all these laws with the robot weapons they have created. The whole robot laws thing is dumb. Robots are machines and therefore can not be told to protect their own existence unless it brings harm to a human. Absolutely silly and I think such laws bring a kind of dumbfounding color to the science of robotics. These laws came from the fertile mind of a science fiction author and were never meant to have any sort of practical application.
The Robot Institute of America says that a robot is a programmable multifunctional manipulator made to move materials or tools by programmed actuators to perform a variety of tasks. Most people think of a robot as a machine made to mimic some kind of human task. Indeed, a robot is nothing more than a mechanical device that performs some mundane task that is easy to automate.
Robot arms are the most widely used machines in robotics today. Robotic arms are used in applications throughout the world. They are used when dealing with dangerous working conditions such as touching hazardous materials or lifting things too heavy for a human. They are also used in the space program where humans working in outer space is just too dangerous. They are even used deep under the ocean where humans would be crushed in seconds due to high operating pressures in the environment.
Some of the most advanced robotic arms have such amenities as a rotating base, pivoting shoulder, pivoting elbow, rotating wrist and gripper fingers. All of these amenities allow the robotic arm to do work that closely resembles what a man can do only without the risk.
