Murder on Monday: Graceful all-megastar production of Agatha Christie’s whodunit set in the 1930s, with unrecognizable Finney as the master-sleuth Hercule Poirot, and all his suspects on the same railroad train. Vibrant amusement, although severely slow paced. Bergman won Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Cast includes Albert Finney, Lauren Bacall, Martin Balsam, Ingrid Bergman, Jacqueline Bisset, Jean-Pierre Cassel, Sean Connery, John Gielgud, and Wendy Hiller. (128 minutes, 1974)
The Big Squeeze: Boyle works in a bar to aid her injured ballplayer spouse Bercovici but then come to see that he’s neglected to notify her of a $130,000 settlement he’s acquired, so she enlists the services of a drifter-hustler (Dobson) to get the money. Cast includes Lara Flynn Boyle, Peter Dobson, Danny Nucci, Luca Bercovici, Teresa Despina, and Michael Chieffo. (98 minutes, 1996)
Mysterious Lady: An Austrian armed forces officer (Nagel) falls in love with Garbo, clueless that she’s a Russian agent. Another contrived plot made serviceable by Garbo herself. Cast includes Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Albert Pollet, and Edward Connelly. (96 minutes, 1928)
House on 92nd Street: Arousing documentary style drama-based movie. It’s about truth and orchestrated on true locations about FBI counterespionage exercises throughout WW2: Nazi representatives, operating in N.Y.C. try to steal part of the atom bomb secrets. Charles G. Booth made an Oscar for this story. Cast includes William Eythe, Lloyd Nolan, Signe Hasso, Gene Lockhart, Leo G. Carroll, and Lydia Clair. (88 minutes, 1945)
The Good Shepard: Edward Wilson, a patriotic American, finds himself working for the OSS (what will become the CIA). When the war ends, he becomes one of the founders of the CIA. He is intensely devoted to his career, eventually at the expense of everything else in his life.
The Nutcracker Prince: Physician Down treats an obvious madman, who then goes through a hallucinatory rerun of his current experiences: he’s a French anthropologist who’s materialized in L.A. and has been drawn to a band of bizarre street people. Cast includes Megan Follows, Peter Brosnan, Adam Ant, Anna-Maria Monticelli, Hector Mercado, and Mary Woronov. (75 minutes, 1990)
Fandango: Five college friends have one last fling before moving on to face the real world. Based on the film Proof, and enlarged to box office level under sponsorship of Steven Spielberg. Cast includes Kevin Costner, Judd Nelson, Sam Robards, Ditch Bush, and Brian Cesak. (91 minutes, 1985)
