I got an email from a friend the other day asking if I had the movie “GoodFellas” on DVD that he could borrow. I emailed him back the following – “Quit bugging me – just go download it!”

Well, I put it more tactfully than that; but I think I threw her off a little at first.

What I was trying to convey to her was that she didn’t need to go track down the DVD. If you want to watch a movie, all you really need is an internet connection.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about what the best ways to download movies online is and also if there are any websites which can boast of a large selection of movies.

First off – yes, the selection of movies online is huge online. You can easily find a movie like Goodfellas, along with all the new releases and movies from the past. You will find a far better selection online than you would in any video store.

Now that we’ve addressed that, let’s get to the real question ? where can I download movies online?

First, I think it’s important to mention where NOT to go to download movies. There are a number of “shareware” programs such as Kazaa or Limewire that people use to find music, movies or other files online. These don’t work too badly for music, but for movies they are horrendous.

These networks may have some movies, but they also are completely unmonitored, so you never know what you are really downloading ? you can easily catch a virus this way. You never know just what you are downloading from these networks.

Two other problem with these types of sites – selection and download speeds.

A movie is a large file to download. When you’re using a shareware program it can easily take over a day or two to finish downloading as the speeds can be terribly slow at times. You also won’t find many of the movies you are looking for. The selection is limited compared to other options you have.

There are also paid download sites out there. There are many pay-per-download sites. You can look for the movie you want, pay a fee (about $10, usually) and download the movie quickly on a secure connection.

This isn’t a bad choice, but you can get movies much cheaper than this.

There are now specialty, membership-based movie download websites that let you download unlimited movies from their database simply by logging in to their website. To become a member, you pay a one-time only fee (about $35-45 usually) and are then able to download movies whenever you want.

The great thing about these sites is that you only have to pay once for access to a huge selection of movies. The download speeds are good and they are guaranteed to be free of viruses.

The best of these membership sites will also give you software to burn these movies to DVD so that you aren’t limited to watching them on your computer.

Did my friend find Goodfellas?

She did. And I don’t think she’ll be asking me to loan her any DVDs anytime soon!
