Replacing a kitchen is not the cheapest of tasks, far from it in fact, but if yours is looking a little tired and in need of TLC, there is an alternative. Often just as effective, and certainly more affordable is to update the kitchen cabinets.

In all likelihood, the actual structure of the kitchen cabinets will be as good as they were from new. To check for this, they should be thoroughly cleaned and checked for damage. Even if there are damaged, repairs should be fairly straight forward.

For any damage that needs major attention, the particular panels themselves will most likely be able to be replaced quite affordably at local timber yards.

Once this work has been completed, the fun can really start. Rather than replacing an entire kitchen; simply painting the kitchen cabinets themselves can give brilliant results. This is true for almost all types. Time should be spent looking around show kitchens for ideas and looking for suitable paints and varnishes.

If you aren’t fancying a whole new paint job, or just want something a little less time consuming, applying self adhesive veneers could be an idea. Other self adhesive options are available too; such as moldings and other design features.

It is important that accurate measurements of all doors are taken separately. Whilst it is likely they were designed to be much the same size, there will be vagaries. Doors can be made to order of course, but again, costs can be kept down by visiting reclamation yards. It is also worth asking at local hardware stores as they may have surplus doors at a knock down price.

If the doors of the kitchen cabinets do not need replacing, and it is very much a refreshing change you are after; working glass paneling in could be an excellent idea. This doesn’t take too much work really, and depending on the glass selected, can be turned to suit traditional or modern styles.
