Anytime a Hollywood motion picture is released the ambition is to create a motion picture that the public loves and that will become a chartbuster hit. Take a remarkable story, throw in a couple of distinguished stars along with some special effects and voila’, a huge box office success. But it doesn’t always work that way. Sometimes a film will include everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.
Live Flesh – Besotted child of a prostitute is incarcerated for inadvertently shooting and paralyzing a cop. Original story of teenager’s mistake that takes him to prison. Spanish language. Cinematically stimulating, albeit, with a bravura finale. Cast includes Pedro Almodovar, Liberto Rabal, Francesca Neri, Javier Bardem, Angela Molina, Jose Sancho, and Penelope Cruz. (100 minutes,’97)
The Last Time I Saw Archie – Webb’s single try at comedy is less ludicrous than some of his more serious films; a shame, since William Bowers’ script-based on his own Army experiences had indisputable potential, and Mitchum pleasurably underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes,’61)
My Son the Hero – Larger-than-life motion picture in regards to sinister Emperor Cadmus of Thebes, who challenges the lords and faces the fury of the Titans. Cast includes Pedro Armendariz, Jacqueline Sassard, Antonella Lualdi, and Giuliano Gemma. (122 minutes,’62)
Sexy Beast – A retired British criminal, living the life in Spain, is visited by a violent gangster who wants him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster’s film has tremendous acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the hateful perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)
The Last Seduction – Pathologically malevolent and strikingly sensual female ditches her spouse, snatches the cash he has made in a drug deal, and escapes N.Y.C. to a tiny upstate town where she attracts and bewilders a local gentleman who becomes her latest patsy. Fiorentino’s spicy femme fatale makes Stanwyck in Triple Indemnity look like Snow White! The movie is a sizzling, seductive thriller from contemporary film noir master Dahl and author Steve Barancik. Cast includes Linda Fiorentino, Peter Berg, J. T. Walsh, Bill Nunn, Bill Pullman, Michael Raysses, and Zach Phifer. (110 minutes,’94)
Lantana – Touching, adult tale of relations obstructed by monotony, routine, and absence of articulation. LaPaglia plays a cop, whose marriage has stagnated, leading him to have an affair. In the mean time, he investigates the disappearance of a lady whose own marriage is in danger. The film is beautifully nuanced at every turn. Cast includes Anthony LaLaglia, Geoffrey Hurry, Barbara Hershey, Kerry Armstrong, Rachael Blake, Vince Colosimo, Daniela Farinacci, and Peter Phelps. (121 minutes, 2001)
